Photos from our journeys around the Island

Sugar cane, St Thomas Parish

Brighton Market, St George Parish

 Long Beach

Long Beach is located on the South coast Atlantic side of the island.  It is very windy, making it popular with wind surfers and kite surfers.  The water here is rough with strong undertows.

Silver Sands Beach, Christchurch Parish

At the "Round Rock Apartments by the Sea" restaurant,
We've been here a few times for lunch.

The water here is choppy and the beach is windy, making it ideal for kite surfers.
Silver Sands Beach has also been the official venue for the deAction Barbados Waterman Festival, and the start of many Professional Windsurfing World Cup Tours.

St. John Parish Church

St. John Parish Church, a classic Gothic church, was built in 1846, to replace the church that was destroyed by the Great Hurricane of 1831.  The original church was built from stone in 1660.

In the courtyard grows a Silk Cotton Tree (Ceiba).
The flossy fibre contained in the pods is used to stuff pillows.

The cliff edge site commands a sweeping view of the east coast

In the churchyard rests Ferdinando Paleologus, a descendant of Emperor Constantine the Great, whose family was driven from the throne in Constantinople by the Turks.  Ferdinando died here in 1678, after being a resident for over 20 years.

Bathsheba, on the East coast of Barbados

St Andrews Parish, on the East coast

During the colonial years under British rule, the landscape was thought to resemble the rolling hills of Scotland, and was nicknamed "the Scotland district".
The parish is one of the more unspoiled areas of the island, and is home to several natural reserves.

Dover Beach

Dover Beach is located in the middle of St Lawrence Gap, on the South coast. It is a very popular beach with watersports available such as jet-skiing, Hobie cat sailing, boogie boarding and wind surfing. Nearby are many small stalls selling food and drink and souvenirs.

Barbados Blue

Thanks all for visiting my first attempt at a blog.

We're flying home tomorrow, sadly leaving the sun and warmth.
But...as a wise certain someone said, if we don't go home, we can't look forward to returning!

Browne's Beach and Elegance Cat cruise

Browne's Beach

The water here is very calm, and there is a reef not too far out — you can see in the photo above, it's the long dark shadow — so the snorkelling is great.

Lots of fishies!

For lunch that day we went to "Daddy's", a small establishment in St Lawrence Gap.  We'd been told the chicken was good, and it was.
I learned later though that the beer was 4 for $10.
That was the real reason we went there I think...

Elegance Catamaran Cruise

"Elegance" is a small cat, and only takes a maximum of 14 people.
The day we went there were only 9 of us, plus 4 crew members.  We went on the sunset cruise, and sailed up the West coast.  All drinks — rum, beer or wine — and a delicious meal with flying fish, chicken, salads and macaroni pie were included.  We went snorkelling with the turtles and also stopped for a dive to a shipwreck.  It was great fun!

 Yes, that is my foot...yikes!

North Point

What a lovely day we had yesterday!  R and D joined us for our jaunt up to the north of the island.  We decided to zig zag our way up there, so we could stop at "Cutters" for lunch.

Delicious fish cutters and #1 Rum punch! *hic*

Then it was on to Bathsheba, where we stopped for a bit of a walk along the beach.

I picked up a bit of 'sea glass'.  What for, I'm not sure yet....

Then, the drive up to North Point.  Each time we go there we get lost.  We find it though, but we ALWAYS take the wrong turn, and then say, "Oh yeah, we were supposed to turn left at the ...."

We drove back about 4 and got caught in busy Friday evening traffic..  But, home about 5
 - so wine o'clock time

How did they get that car up there?

Off to Birdies for dinner.  I had shepherd's pie (and it was very good) with Caesar salad as only Birdies can make it --  with olives and tomatoes!

After a rough couple of days, we're moving forward now.
